PROFILE:

Ray Avery was hooked on photography from the first “Argus C3” camera he received from his father in 1945. His love of jazz runs deep as well. He opened his first jazz record shop, The Record Roundup, in 1947. The business allowed Ray the time to pursue in earnest his interest in jazz photography. Ray attended all of the Monterey Jazz festivals from 1958-2002, attended several Nice, France jazz festivals, spent ten years covering the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festivals and became one of the official photographer’s for the Stars of Jazz television series. His photographs have appeared in over 300 jazz books, over 150 LP covers, over 200 CD covers, numerous film documentaries and international jazz magazines. Ray exhibited worldwide until his death in November 2002.

The Ray Avery Photo Archives continue to be available for commercial licensing via his photo assistant and archivist, Cynthia Sesso. Cynthia also curates exhibitions globally of Ray’s fine photography.
